Writers Guidelines
The Seven Hills Contest for Writers
invites participation in several prose genres. For 2008 these are Short Stories,
Creative Nonfiction, and Children's Literature (Chapter books or short stories).
Winning entries are published in the 2009 Seven Hills Review. Open to
writers everywhere.
Submissions accepted from January 1 until September 30 ( firm postmark deadline)
Entries must be unpublished works in the one of the listed categories. Click on category title for list of judging criteria and definition of category.
Short Story: 2500 words maximum (any genre but no short/shorts)
Creative
Nonfiction: 2500 words maximum (any subject)
Children’s
Literature (Chapter Books or Short Stories)----2500 word maximum for
readers ages 6-12.
PLEASE INDICATE ON YOUR MANUSCRIPT WHETHER YOUR BOOK IS INTENDED FOR AGES 6-8 OR
AGES 9-12.
The two categories will be offered in alternate years.
No illustrations can be accepted. Note: Children’s Picture Books will be
accepted in the 2009 competition.
Awards: Winners will be announced via email by December 15, with a further celebration of achievement at the 2009 Seven Hills Writers' Conference. (If you don’t have an email address, enclose a SASE to receive a list of winners.) First Place winners in each category will receive $100; Second Place, $75; and Third Place, $50. Winners will also receive Certificates of Achievement either at the spring Seven Hills Writers’ Conference or through the mail. All award winners and honorable mentions will be published in the Seven Hills Review. One free copy provided to winners. Additional copies available for purchase through this website.
Submissions:
Contestants should submit THREE COPIES of each entry. Entries must be typed,
double-spaced, 8½ X 11” paper, one side, 12 point font, with submission title in
upper left corner and page number in upper right corner of each page. Author’s
name is not to appear on manuscript pages.
---Submit one cover page with your entry, including story title, category of
entry, word length, author’s name, mailing address, phone and email address. If
you are entering the Children’s Chapter Book or Short Story contest, indicate
whether your target age group is 6-8 or 9-12. Please double check the accuracy
of your email address as this is how we will contact you. On the cover page,
please include a short bio (one paragraph).
---Do not staple the cover page or bio to your manuscript. There is no need
for an additional cover letter. You may enter as many submissions per category
as you like. No entries will be accepted electronically or without fees.
Manuscripts will not be returned or retained after the contest.
Fees: Non-TWA members: $15 per submission. TWA members: $10 per submission.
Deadline: September 30 ( firm postmark deadline).
Send: Three copies of each manuscript and one cover page with fees to: TWA Seven Hills Contest, P.O. Box 3428, Tallahassee, FL 32315. On outside of envelope write category of entry/entries.
